CLEVELAND, OHIO | Professional golf is evolving quickly. With new leagues like LIV and TGL (Tomorrow’s Golf League), an increased focus on sustainability, and new leadership, it’s enough to give golf fans whiplash. As we enter Spring, it’s time to revisit an age-old debate about one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments: Should The PLAYERS Championship still be considered the “fifth major” on the PGA TOUR?
The short answer is yes. The reasons why might surprise you.
First, why is it called The PLAYERS Championship? Let’s take a look at the history.
The inaugural event was played in 1974 at the Atlanta Country Club in Marietta, Georgia, under the name “Tournament Players Championship.” PGA TOUR Commissioner, Deane Beman, a former player himself, wanted to create a tournament for the players, by the players—where PGA TOUR members had a stronger sense of ownership. After all, the PGA TOUR wouldn’t be what it is without professional golfers. In 1982, the tournament found it’s permanent home at TPC Sawgrass, which remains one of golf’s most prestigious venues.
For years, The PLAYERS has been unofficially recognized as golf’s “fifth major.” However, some traditionalists and golf historians only acknowledge golf's four official majors—the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and Open Championship (British Open).
So what’s our opinion? The PLAYERS is definitely considered a major. Here’s why:
Biggest Purse — The PLAYERS consistently offers one of the largest purses in professional golf. This year is no exception, with a $25 million purse and $4.5 million winner’s share—it is the biggest prize of the 2025 season. For perspective, golf legend, Arnold Palmer's career earnings were $3.9 million dollars!
Strong Field — Let’s face it, money talks. By having the biggest purse and a rich history, The PLAYERS consistently draws top-tier talent. Even without LIV Golf players, the field remains super strong with 48/50 top ranked players in the World Golf Rankings.
Unmatched Commercialization — No tournament outside the majors rivals The PLAYERS in terms of sponsorship, branding, on-site hospitality, attendance and overall commercial impact. The PGA TOUR has built it into a key event, leveraging its status to draw in global viewership.
Fan Engagement & Ratings — High attendance and strong ratings further validate its popularity.
Prestigious Venue — TPC Sawgrass is a course that provides a demanding test. Unlike some of the other majors, which rotate locations, The PLAYERS has built its identity around a consistent venue, highlighted by one of golf’s most famous hole, the par-3 17th island green.
Rich Tradition — The LPGA expanded its major count to five in 2013. If women's professional golf can adjust, why shouldn’t the PGA TOUR? The PLAYERS Championship challenges tradition and has earned its spot as the fifth.
Do you agree, if not, why?
